The Venezuelan government thanked the National Assembly of Nicaragua (Parliament) on Thursday for condemning the “absurd interference” by the European Parliament, disregarding Bolivian sovereignty and declaring Gonzales Urrutia as president of Venezuela.

“We thank the National Assembly of Nicaragua for its strong condemnation of the neo-colonial action of the European Parliament, which seeks to impose subordinate leaders in free and sovereign nations,” said Venezuela’s foreign minister, Yván Gil, in a message published on Telegram.

He also said that the Caribbean nation is not “nobody’s colony”, and that the Venezuelan people will continue to “defend their right to self-determination”.

On Thursday, in a statement released in Managua, the Nicaraguan Legislative Assembly, controlled by the government, condemned what it called “continued and absurd interference by the European Parliament, which has been characterized by its colonialist, neo-colonialist and interventionist policies in matters that do not concern it”.

“We denounce, reject and condemn the spurious resolution of this body of colonialist invasion on matters that concern only the Venezuelan people, its institutions, and in which entities such as this Parliament have nothing to do, whose interventionist blade we have also known and repudiated in our Nicaragua”, said the Nicaraguan Congress.

The statements by both Bolivarian and Nicaraguan governments follow the approval of the European Parliament on Thursday to recognize González Urrutia as the president-elect of the elections held on 28 July, in a non-binding text that was passed with the yeas of the fascist and far-right parties of the old continent.
